-- Jeffrey and Michael Derderian, owners of the Station in West Warwick, Rhode Island where the infamous Great White concert fire took place on 2/20/03 pled no contest to involuntary manslaughter charges on Wednesday. The brothers' lawyer, Kathleen Hagerty, told Billboard.com that Michael Derderian will serve 4 years in a minimum security prison, with eligibility for a work release program, and that Jeffrey Derderian will receive a suspended 10-year sentence.
To say relatives of the 100 people who died in the fire, caused by pyrotechnics ignited foam soundproofing because Great White are a bunch of has-been losers attempting to relive their arena glory days, is an understatement as these two fuckers got off with a slap on the wrist for their role in the fourth deadliest fire in this country's history.
Attorney General Patrick Lynch expressed his objection to Jeffrey Derderian getting a sentence to less than jail time but also stated that the plea deals showed that the brothers were accepting responsibility after months of denial. The Derderian brothers will change their pleas on 9/29 and be sentenced once relatives of those killed present victim impact statements. The pleas were made just as jury selection was underway for Michael Derderian's criminal trial followed by Jeffrey's trial. Michael gets the tougher sentence because he is the one who purchased one who bought the foam which quickly caught fire and burned down the club with approximately 300 people packed inside.
Following the tragic fire Great White singer Jack Russell confirmed with local television station WJAR-TV that the band was given approval to use pyrotechnics in the tiny venue before the show.
In May, former Great White tour manager Daniel Biechele was sentenced to four years in prison for igniting the pyrotechnics without the required permit. He pleaded guilty in February to 100 counts of involuntary manslaughter.
