UFC 67 Nomadic Review

Welcome to the Nomadic review of UFC 67 All or Nothing or as I have renamed it UFC 67 Travis Lutter is a Fat Ass!

The PPV opened up with a video package showing clips of all the fighters and the following happened:

-Mirko CroCop said he was going to give the fans what they wanted…a KO

-Quinton Jackson said if you wanted to see a great fight, watch his.

-Marvin Eastman was looking ahead in his career obviously as he dropped the names of both King Kong and Godzilla saying it didn’t matter who his opponent was.

-Travis Lutter promised 5 rounds of 100% action… BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

-Some PRIDE FC footage of CroCop and Jackson was aired which seemed to me like a sign of things to come.

Commentary team is Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan and the first thing they did was to bury Travis Lutter six feet under with concrete on top. They showed footage from the weigh-in with Silva weighing in perfectly and Lutter weighing in 2 pounds over. 2 hours later, he was re-weighed and he had only got down to 186.5, which meant that he was no longer fighting for the Middleweight Championship. This annoyed Rogan who made a good point about Travis not having a coach and how this may have been a reason for him not to make weight…personally I think it’s one to many trips to the buffet and not getting in shape when you knew months in advance about this fight. Hence Travis Lutter is the dumbest man in MMA today for fucking up this perfect opportunity. Silva was pissed off at this and intended to knock the fuck out of him as punishment…I LOVE ANDERSON SILVA!

Other notes from the opening of the PPV were:

-Joe Rogan marking out like a five year old boy meeting Mickey Mouse at Mirko and Quinton.

-Japan was code for PRIDE FC.

-Myself thinking that Joe Rogan wanted to take Quinton Jackson out to dinner and show him the sights after nearly achieving orgasm talking about him.

Enough of these random observations, onto the fights~!

Patrick Cote vs. Scott Smith

Referee – Yves Lavigne

Nothing much happened in the opening round, the only thing of real note was Cote reversing a Smith knee into a fantastic slam to the mat only to have him get right up. Round two was more of the same with both men seemingly unable to work out what to do. But it was in this round where one of the most ridiculous things I have ever seen in the UFC occurred. Patrick Cote hit Smith with a hard right hand that stunned him and what was his reaction to this…to do a crane like pose in front of Cote like a complete and utter fucktard! It would have been only perfect if while Smith was in this pose, Cote just punched the fuck out of him and humbled him as punishment. Round three was more of the same shit and the fight went to the judges. Patrick Cote was declared the winner by unanimous decision (30-27) but the real winner of this fight was Joe Rogan putting the following image into my head during the break between rounds two and three while they were looking at Anderson Silva in his locker room: Silva coming to the octagon giggling and kneeing the cameraman. 5*

The crowd HATED this fight with vigour and Patrick Cote played up to this by saying to them while being interviewed by Rogan: “I will be back and you can boo me again!”

UFC 68 promo aired containing GSP, Hughes and Franklin…roll on March 3!

Quinton Jackson vs. Marvin Eastman

Referee – “Big” John McCarthy

I have to note that in his pre-fight promo Marvin Eastman noted that he was going to throw the sink, table and towels at Jackson…I wonder how long it will be until Vince Russo steals this idea and makes the first ever “Bathroom items on a pole” match?

There was an awesome moment prior to the fight where McCarthy called both men into the centre to give them their final instructions, they got NOSE TO NOSE~! and they looked intense! That’s what I want to see: two men who want to beat the shit out of each other. Round one begun with fast and furious action with Jackson landing a good uppercut that stunned Eastman momentarily. But after this initial minute of non stop action, it slowed down and McCarthy was made to break them up a few times. This was not what the crowd wanted and they started to boo. Obviously Quinton Jackson heard this as he then proceeded to unleash on Eastman landing a sweet left hook followed by an uppercut. Eastman did have his moments as well but Jackson won this round. As both men went back to their corners, we got to sit in with Jackson’s trainer who looked almost like Rocky Balboa’s trainer was giving him advice, I laughed.

Round two begun again with both men pressing the action and each fighter landing punches and elbows and then….the end came. Quinton caught Eastman with three uppercuts in a row, hit him with a right hand to the temple and finally landed a punch on the chin that sent him to the mat and it was over! After the fight, Jackson was checking on Eastman to make sure he was ok which was a nice show of respect and then he started talking to Joe Rogan. This was one of the best interviews all night with him first thanking God for blessing him, admitting he was nervous tonight so that explained why he was a bit timid at first and then he threw out this line in reference to his friendship with Eastman: “We’re friends but in there it’s black-on-black crime time!” The crowd then began to cheer loudly and he was over. Who wouldn’t want to cheer this man after that? I can’t wait to see more of Jackson in UFC.

Roger Huerta vs. John Halverson

Referee – Yves Lavigne

This fight went 19 seconds and still managed to create a stir inside the Mandalay Bay Events Center. Halverson went for a knee that was caught by Huerta who forced him to the ground and Halverson flipped over backwards. It was then that Huerta threw a vicious knee strike to what looked like Halverson’s head which I’m sure is an illegal move but the referee allowed it but Halverson was fucked after that. Huerta mounted his back and began to rain punches down and after what seemed like an eternity Lavigne finally called a halt. In my opinion, the referee should have stopped the fight after the knee strike because Halverson was done there and then and the subsequent punches were unnecessary. Goldberg and Rogan were debating the knee strike and from one angle it did look like Huerta did indeed connect with Halverson’s head but from a different angle, it was proven that he actually hit his shoulder so everything was ok. I would like a rematch so we could see for sure who is the better man.

Mirko CroCop vs. Eddie Sanchez

Referee –Steve Mazzagatti

At this point, Randy “The Natural” Couture joined Goldberg and Rogan in commentary for this fight and he was excited to see Mirko finally fighting in the UFC. During his interview Mirko threw out this line: “The left leg puts you in the hospital, the right puts you in the cemetery” BEWARE OF THIS MAN, HE WILL FUCK YOU UP! Also, he came out to the PRIDE theme music which is also another sign surely of UFCs imminent purchase of PRIDE but then again I could be wrong. The crowd was firmly behind CroCop with Croatian paraphernalia spread out across the arena. Round one was basically Sanchez backing away from CroCop as he stalked forward towards him with a emotionless expression on his face like a robot. He then proceeded to attempt kicks and punches landing a straight left to Sanchez and eventually he hit the High Kick of Doom~! to the top of his head. He then fell to the ground, CroCop got on top and rained down punches until the referee had seen enough and stopped this demolition at 4.33 into the round. Mirko showed tonight why he is regarded as one of the best heavyweights in the world and I am sure a title shot is in the near future for him which will result in the crowning of a new champion.

“And now from the Mandalay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. IT’S TIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIME FOR OUR UFC MAIN EVENT OF THE EVENING!” For once Bruce, you are correct. Well done!

Anderson Silva vs. Travis “Fat Fuck” Lutter

Referee – Herb Dean

Anderson Silva came into the octagon with one goal in mind: the destruction of Travis Lutter and to begin with…nothing happened. For the first minute or so, both fighters did nothing of note. That was until Silva caught Lutter with a hard knee and then the floodgates opened. Lutter took Silva to the ground and did absolutely nothing and he was given a present which was a double upwards kick to the gut which he did not enjoy. Lutter regained control on the ground and then attempted to put on the laziest looking armbar to which Anderson Silva got out of and got back to his feet and took Lutter to the ground and stood up, motioning to him to get up to. Lutter decided to just lie there like a dummy until the round ended. This was Anderson Silva’s round easily. Round two began with Lutter once again taking Silva to the ground and this was where things started to turn awesome! Lutter was moving into attack and Silva turned this into a tight triangle choke to which there seemed no escape from. This was true for around a minute as Lutter was trapped in this choke, trying desperately to get out and once Silva was bored with waiting for him to tap, he added some hard shots to the head and Lutter tapped out immediately following. HUMBLED IN THE ANDERSON SILVA WAY~! Anderson then proceeded to have a victory dance to which I heartily approve of and then in his interview with Joe Rogan he invited Chuck Liddell to his after show party because he needed to find sparring partners to train with. This was some great stuff.

I stopped watching after the main event but I know they showed some of the dark matches as they had some time to spare but you can read about them somewhere else on this fine site.

Overall this gets two thumbs up, the opening match was about as exciting as watching ECW but everything else made up for it.
