OC Times Editorial: TNA iMPACT - 04/12/2007
The title is the best I've got for now.
Welcome to the best recap of iMPACT on the internet as voted on by a panel of one.
It is late, but like I always say better late than on time.
It is late because I was out during the broadcast last night and had I been home I would've been watching the Braves. God bless Borrents!
The show opens with Borash backstage. He says this is the Final iMPACT (woohoo!!!) ... before Lockdown (rats!!, so close).
Konnan comes in and tells JB that since he's tight with 3D he can tell them that LAX has a surprise for them later. Or, Team 3D could just ease drop on the taping of the segment and find out that way, whatever works.
A recap of last week's show airs and if you don't know what happened last week...you obviously didn't read our recap so go sit in the corner until you've learned true shame.
Sting, Rhino and Samoa Joe are already in the ring and Kurt Angle is on his way. I do like Angle's music.
Tenay calls Lockdown the Ultimate in Violence. He said it therefor it must be true. West tells us that tonight a member of Team Angle will meet a member of Team Cage and whomever wins will earn his team the advantage at Lethal Lockdown. Please note, that the 2 men will meet not meat, I wouldn't want to hear about Mark Danger trying to jack-off using Tomko's face or something. It was a near tragedy the last time, no repeat need occur.
Sting tells Angle that he's sorry he didn't return his phone calls. It was nothing personal against Angle or his team. He had issues to work out and he has worked them out and now he's back. He then asks Kurt to pretty-please take him to the senior prom. Sting's therapist better get paid by the minute because he worked out all of his issues between his interview airing last week and the end of the show.
Sting says he is who God made him to be, well I'd think that would be obvious. Anyway, God made him a pro wrestler and he loves TNA. So God made him a man with no taste apparently. I should note that someone or a group of someone's booed when Sting said this, so they apparently decided to attend a show for free even though they hate it. Well, I guess that's better than buying a ticket and doing it like certain ECW fans, but still I'm glad the PPV is not in Orlando this weekend.
He also loves the fact that he was picked for the team. We've got the War machine, the killer, the shooter and the Stinger. Sting showing us that he can in fact count to 5 points out that they are still one short. Sting tells Angle to introduce that last man.
Kurt is not quick to do this. He respects Sting more than he'll ever know but he just can't do that right now. The crowd let out an awww at the respect comment. In therapy hour Angle says there are things he has to come to grips with before he can make that choice. Are these 2 trying to be 15 year-olds trying to decide whether or not to go all the way or something?
Joe is asking them to be real, I suggest that they start with dialog. He tells Kurt that he's starting not to believe in him anymore. Seriously, this is like TNA Prom-date or something. Dr. Phil needs to come out and get these guys to stop wining. Joe's not much for conspiracy theories, well introduce him to Alan Lee then. Anyway, he points out that they are a man down and it seems to him that Kurt's road to the title is a lot easier without Rhino around, without Sting around and without Joe around. I guess all 3 of these guys are going to get whacked by Angle at the most opportune time.
Joe wants this to be real simple for Kurt. Since this is TNA that will not happen. He says it will be simple for him to tell them who the partner is going to be. Kurt insists that Joe never question is integrity. What about his intelligence or intensity?
Seriously, the crowd is making this just like the Oprah show with their ooooohing and ahhhhhing.
Kurt says you want number 5, he'll make a deal with all of them. He swears it on the American flag. He repeatedly promises that there will be 5 and thankfully this interview is over.
The regular show opening airs now. Rhino said nothing during that little speech.
The countdown to Lockdown is on says Mike Tenay. That line must've taken him all day to come up with. West says that the possibilities are endless for the main event tonight.
Kevin Nash is in the ring. He says there will be many impostors but there is only one Black Machismo. Jay Lethal comes out and his music is a great remix of Randy Savage's music.
So, Tenay says that for the past few months Nash has been offering his advice to the x-division wrestlers. Now this makes me wonder how he went from feuding with them to coaching them, I like missed about 10 chapters here.
Machismo has the mic. His Savage impression is pretty damn awesome in short bursts. Chris Sabin comes out for a match, a match on a wrestling show. I'm not sure this concept will catch on.
Match 1: Black Machismo Jay Lethal Vs. Chris Sabin
This is a non-title match.
Crowd chants Macho Lethal. West says that Lockdown is his favorite Pay Per View. Remember this when he tries to sell you on Sacrifice next month.
West finally suggests that if Christian gets the pin that will keep the title match up in the air. So much for my theory of them not bringing up that fact until the show and then being all confused when Christian wins. Good theories die young. Actually, good theories don't die but one can't argue such minor points.
LAX promises a surprise for Team 3D and Angle promises a fifth member. We will combine this in to 1 surprise and Angle's fifth man will be LAX and the surprise for 3D is that they don't have a match.
Crowd informs Sabin that he sucks.
West ponders why Angle would want to keep the fifth man a secret from his teammates. I ponder why Angle would want to tell his opponents who any of his teammates are, because TNA hasn't stripped me of all logical thought...yet.
Lethal elbows Sabin in the chest, they collide mid-ring and then a clothesline gets a 2 count for Lethal. There I've filled my play-by-play quota for this match. Sabin comes from the outside into the ring with a tornado DDT and that gets 2.
Sabin whips Lethal in the corner, telegraphs the boot and that allows Lethal to hit a spin kick. Lethal goes up top and he hits the top rope elbow and that gets him the win.
Winner: Black Machismo Jay Lethal
This wins move of the night, nice that they determine that after only 1 match.
West and Tenay run down the card.
*X-scape match for the X-title: Sonjay Dutt Vs. Shark Boy Vs. Alex Shelley Vs. Black Machismo Vs. Chris Sabin
*Robert Roode Vs. Petey Williams
*Jerry Lynn Vs. Christopher Daniels
*Special Referee: Bob Backlund, Senshi Vs. Austin Starr
*Blindfold Match: James Storm Vs. Chris Harris
*Jackie Moore Vs. Gail Kim
*Voodoo Kin Mafia Vs. Christy Hemme's Mystery Team
*Electrified Cage for the NWA World Tag Team Titles: Team 3D Vs. The Latin American Xchange
*Lethal Lockdown, whomever scores the fall earns a title shot.
Team Cage: Scott Steiner, Tomko, Abyss, AJ Styles and Christian Cage
Vs.
Team Angle: Sting, Samoa Joe, Rhino and Kurt Angle with one man to be named. *coughCoughJeffJarrettCoughCough* sorry I hate it when colds affect my recapping.
Latisha is with Team Cage. She asks Christian for his response to the stipulation. He says that it made everyone on Angle's team and his own happy. He says things went from bad to worse with Sting resurrected from the dead, again, and then Cornette's stipulation announcement. I must've missed the iMPACT where Sting died, however I do not regret this.
AJ says that this is business and it is all about the title and that's why everyone is there. He says they need to focus on Lockdown because they have the advantage and need to take advantage of it. Christian asks how long it took him to memorize that and that he is already aware of this. Styles disagrees and I guess the competition is to see who's team is the most dysfunctional.
Christian says that if Angle doesn't have a partner by now he doesn't have one, period. He then says that they will take AJ's advice and worry about tonight now and worry about Lockdown later. I don't think that's what AJ had in mind. Then Steiner says, then they worry about his title shot and Christian is disappointed that they all put themselves before the team.
Still to come, who will do battle for Team Angle and team Cage?
Commercial, edited out...woohoo!
Back from the commercial with Borash hanging out with Lethal, Nash and Sonjay. Nash has Sonjay dressed like Vinny Vegas but Sonjay is not down with this just like he was not down with being Oz last week. Kind of funny for them to cycle through all the Nash persona's.
Eric Young and Robert Roode are now coming in to view and I am suddenly a lot less interested in this segment. Roode says JB can't talk to Young without Roode's permission. Now, James Storm comes in and interrupts talking about his blindfold match. Roode just continues cutting his promo like it is no big deal and tells Petey that at Lockdown he will find out that it pays to be Roode. You see its clever because his name is Roode and rude is either a verb, an adjectiveor an adverb (just for you English majors) and oh...never mind! He asks Jackie if she is ready to give Gail a taste of what is to come on Sunday.
Roode instructs Eric to sit in a chair and don't move. You know he's serious because he repeats it 3 times.
Match 2: Petey Williams and Gail Kim Vs. Robert Roode and Ms. Jackie Moore
First time in TNA, women in the cage this Sunday. Unless you count the time Trinity interfered in the cage match at Lockdown 2005. Read my review of that show for all the details.
I love how if you have a wrestler under contract in TNA, that gives you the right to control who they do and do not talk to and when. I'm guessing Paul White isn't the only one looking to drop the slave name.
Williams goes right after Roode and Gail goes after Jackie.
A move is snapped off and you might be surprised to learn it is a hurricanrana. Gail was ramming Jackie's head into the mat and Roode comes up from behind and slams her down. How dare he, I'm going to have to go to St. Louis to kick his ass. I'm not happy about this as it means I've got to kick his ass for what he did to my love and even worse I've got to go to St. Louis and he'll pay for that even more.
They take a commercial break in the middle of the match. Edited out on the borrent for *****!
The announcers talk about Williams possibly being Young's secret friend. I guess someone left a note in his locker at school.
Gail manages to get back in the match, but James storm distracts Petey Williams and that allows Roode to roll him up for the pin.
Winners: Roode and Ms. Jackie
Chris Harris comes out and grabs Jackie Moore. This allows Storm to attack him from behind. Eric Young comes out and enters the ring defying the orders of Robert Roode. Don West begging for Eric to hit Roode.
Roode insists that EY put the chair down. If he doesn't, Eric will never wrestle again in his life. That's one bad contract Eric Young signed. Young does put the chair down as Tenay explains he has no choice. So holding a chair is a breach of contract, Eric Young needs a new agent and fast.
Borash is backstage and attempts to get an interview with Christopher Daniels. I don't expect this to go well for him. Borash asks several questions and gets no answers. Yep, it did not go well. Strange Daniels doesn't talk now when he wouldn't shut up in his promos building up his change of mind.
Konnan and LAX enter the room with Brother Runt gagged. Runt must be looking to join the Chris Kanyon bondage club, as referenced on the Euan reads the Smackdown spoilers episode of our audio show.
They couldn't find 3D but they did find a family member and tonight he is going to pay a heavy price.
They plug the main event before the commercial break!
Experience TNA live this weekend...no thanks, I'm fine just experiencing it on TV.
A video recapping the 3D and LAX feud leading in to the PPV. The announcer calls it 10,000 volts of violence. Actually, this was a good package.
Konnan in the ring, and on the mic. Butterbean and Crispy Cream, that's still funny. He hopes they can get in to shape for the PPV. Why are they at risk of not making wait, see also Lutter, Travis? Don West swears that Konnan has a gun...in his pants, sorry couldn't resist.
Konnan is dropping some political speech then calls Runt a retard. It turns out the gun is a stun gun and goes to zap Runt. Brother's Ray and D-von come out and ask him not to shoot their brother. Konnan says they're like the U.S. police, shoot first ask questions later. Ray insists that they not shoot, Konnan asks "or what?" and before he gets an answer he shoots Runt with the stun gun.
Tenay is shocked by this development, but yet is fine with them being in a cage that apparently has the same sort of effect. He insists that they cut immediately to a break.
We next see a video hyping up Lockdown as a whole.
We're back to a recap of events that took place before the break and Tenay is using his adult voice. They say that LAX crossed the line, then mentioned the violence of the electrified cage, and then of Lethal Lockdown. I'm so confused!
Darth Vader is here to explain the rules of Lethal Lockdown. Well, at least they're explaining the rules or most of them anyway.
Match 3: AJ Styles Vs. Samoa Joe
Winning team has the advantage at Lockdown or so we are told.
West points out that this is a good call for Angle because Samoa Joe has so much experience beating AJ Styles. Well, that would be true but theoretically Angle wouldn't know that Christian picked Styles until he waited until AJ's music played to make his pick. Crowd chants: "Joe's going to kill you". Only they do not do it with as much enthusiasm as in the past.
Tenay again plugs Lockdown as the most violent PPV but again what LAX did went too far. It is important to remember this.
We go to a commercial break, which is edited out again. Again, I say...woohoo!
Styles is taking it to Samoa Joe as West talks about how Angle has yet to deliver on their promise.
Samoa Joe yells out stupid freaking something before he slams AJ to the mat. As I couldn't hear the last word, I'm just going to assume he meant company.
AJ hits a spinkick and goes for the clash but Samoa Joe escapes. Joe transitions in to the musclebuster but AJ escapes. AJ goes for a pin of his own but Joe reverses to the choke. AJ starts to tap but the referee is doing his best Yuji Shimada impersonation as Christian, Steiner, Tomko and Abyss make their way out.
Out come team Angle and it is on. Jeff Jarrett's theme music hits and out he comes. I wouldn't have played the music I'd just have him come out. Jarrett cracks AJ with a guitar and Samoa Joe pins AJ Styles.
Winner: Samoa Joe
Sting, Rhino and Samoa Joe are shocked by Jeff Jarrett's appearance.
They go to a video for Lockdown hyping up the show, with comments from Shelley, Senshi, Lynn, Harris Team 3D, Christian and Kurt Angle. It was pretty cool actually.
My thoughts: A few dumb things like the high-school like opening segment and the kid fight between AJ and Christian had to be suffered through. The radically exclusive contract that Eric Young has with Robert Rood is unjustifiable but other than that I liked a lot of this show. I believe that the faces having the advantage will turn out to not be true, which is another bait and switch on this show but I actually hope for this one because the face team should always work at a disadvantage in Lethal Lockdown.
Overall, I'd say the show did a pretty good job hyping up the PPV, there was some fun wrestling and I'll give it a thumbs up.
