Dems Vs Wal-Mart?
It is rare that the Old Country Corner will stray in to political talk. We have our reasons which are:
1. The Old Country is a dictatorial democracy We hold free elections but there is only 1 person you can vote for. 2. The Old Country has 100% voter turnout With a population of 1, 100% voter turnout is not that great of an accomplishment. 3. We find politics and politicians to be jokes in their own right, we don't have to come up with the joke, they provide them merely by existing.
However, the strategy mentioned in the NY Times article linked above is an interesting one. I'm not sure that it will win the Democrats any elections, but then that hasn't really been happening lately anyway.
I don't think that Wal-mart is perfect, but then I would be hard pressed to find a company that is, or even a country outside of the Old 1 that is. But, one thing Wal-mart has going for it is that lots of people like to shop there. The fact is that most people care more about how much they save on toothpaste than they do on how much the shelf stocker is making in an hour. You can ask the question whether Americans should be more concerned with the latter than the former and this is something your Old Country Caretaker might have had to argue on both sides back in his Lincoln Douglas Debate days in High School.
This is a topic that does get the Old Country Caretaker to pay attention though because of the fact that Wal-mart just recently opened its first store in the Old Country's host community and so we're studying the economic impact cause there's not a lot else to do in an Old Country with a population of 1.
The other reason that we're interested is because of a book we are reading The Wal-Mart Effect which is an interesting listen, but not interesting enough to keep us from blogging most of the day.
Rich Karlgaard has the counter argument.
We hear at the Old Country Corner have a large fascination with Multi-national corperations especially Coca-cola Disney Time Warner & Wal-mart
So we shall see how successful the strategy of attacking Wal-mart is for Democrats come November. It will be a hit with the unions that's for sure.
