Round-by-Round Coverage: UFC 63 - Hughes Vs. Penn
Refresh your page for continued updates.
Usual UFC opening:
Penn: When I heard I got the fight with Hughes I was happy because I knew I would be champion again.
Owww cocky!
Rogan and Goldberg recap the main events. They say B.J. Penn is natural, he'd better be we don't need any drug test failures.
Now they're talking about the Loiseau Vs. Swick fight. They called Loiseau's fight with Rich Franklin a vicious beating. A world class ass whipping is more like it.
Jens Pulver talk. They welcome him back to the UFC. Evans Vs. Lambert is the talk now as they run down all of the fights on the card.
Its rules time, if you don't know them by now you have to explain to me why you're reading this.
Jens Pulver vs. Joe Lauzon.
I give the nickname edge to Pulver "little evil" is way better than "J-lo" and hopefully I don't have to explain why.
The Consensus in the room is a Pulver win.
The consensus is also that Pulver has better music by a 2-1 vote. Scott was the loan descender.
Lauzon is 12-3 and is out of Bridgewater Mass.
Pulver is 21-6-1 5'7 154 out of Iowa.
Herb Dean is the ref.
Round 1: Lauzon looking good early in round 1.
It is all over, Joe Lauzon upsets Jens Pulver.
Rogan: That's the biggest upset of the night, no shit. But it is also the first match. J-lo proves that the dude with the best nickname doesn't always win the fight, there goes my whole theory.
Lauzon catches Pulver with a left hook and that's all she wrote.
Winner: Joe Lauzon - 48 seconds in the first round.
Scott slams my NFL picks. Shut up, Scott, fuck head!
Pulver was a 7-1 favorite, someone made some money. Some people lost some money as well.
Lauzon is at least capable of explaining what happened. He thinks his next fight will be tough, not if he fights like this again.
Rogan: Did you take him lightly?
Pulver: No.
Pulver: I've been knocked out harder than that, I get knocked out all the time. If I had known this before making my picks, I might have gone a different route. Then again, maybe not.
UFC is brought to you by Mickey's the official beer for mice.
UFC 64 promo. Rich Franklin Vs. Anderson Silva. Florian Vs. Shawn Sherk.
Rich Franklin interview with Rogan.
What do you think of the fight? I'm going to kill him in 5 seconds. Ok, that's not what he said. Franklin says he expects it to be as tough as his fight with Loiseau, funeral arrangements for Anderson Silva will be announced on 10/15.
Tell us what to expect. I expect to break his back, fuck his ass and make him humble. He might not have actually said this either.
Its fight 2:
Rashad Evans Vs. Jason Lambert.
We interrupt this live coverage to announce that my pizza is ready. I'm sure you care.
The music consensus is: 2-1 in favor of Rashad Evans. Scott is disagreeable tonight.
Consensus: 3-0 on Evans to win, of course it was 3-0 for Pulver as well.
Jason Lambert - 22-5 5'10, 205.5 points.
Rashad Evans - 13-0, 5'11, 204.
Lambert wins the nickname battle by forfeit.
Big John McCarthy is the referee.
Round 1: Rashad scores a nice take down early. Rashad is hot early.
Another take down for Rashad gets ooohs and ahhhs from the room.
The third take down of the round is for Rashad.
Tito-Ken promo, expect more.
Lambert has the arm but he lost it.
Scott approves of the pizza and so do I.
Marcus says Lambert looks tired which is not a good sign early. Also, this is Marcus' first Live UFC show. Thumbs up for that!
Evans victory over Bonner was considered an upset. Hindsight says maybe not though. Evans has now taken Lambert to the mat 4 times in this round.
Round 1 goes to Evans.
Scott: If I were fighting, I'd cheat. I'd kick the guy square in the nuts.
Round 2: Evans scores an early take down early. There seems to be a pattern developing.
The crowd is booing as Rashad scores his second take down of the round.
Rashad Evans finishes Lambert off. He just overwhelmed Lambert with punches and busted him open.
Winner: Rashad Evans - 2:22 in the second round.
Rogan: Talk us through the end of the fight.
Evans: I just kept punching the fucker over and over and over again. I may still be making quotes up.
Loiseau Vs. Mike Swick
Tito-Ken the final beating...er...chapter. It does not go head to head with ECW
Rogan interviews St. Pierre.
Rogan: What do you think of the match tonight?
St. Pierre: I hope nobody gets hurt tonight, I plan to do some killing in my next fight. Again, he was much nicer than I, but doesn't this prove I should write promos for these guys?
Rogan: What do you think of Loiseau Vs. Swick?
St. Pierre: Hopefully Swick doesn't break his hand on David's face.
Rogan: Penn or Hughes?
St. Pierre: Not gonna tell.
Fight 3: Melvin Guillard vs. Gabe Ruediger
Scott ponders: Why would you name your kid Melvin?
I say: Yeah, cause the name Liedle is better? Then I think he flipped me off, but I wasn't looking.
The Young Assassin: Reminds me of a saying, when you assassinate, you make an ass out of I and Nate.
Marcus: I wonder if he will change his nickname when he gets older? (I think that's a fair point you wouldn't want a 100 year old young assassin)
Consensus: 3-0 in favor of Guillard's music although Scott thinks they both suck.
Gabe Ruediger - 10-2, 5'10, 155
Melvin Guillard - 38-6-3, 5'9, 156
Scott: Young assassin sounds more threatening than Godzilla. Hmm, this is clearly the type of coverage you expect from OCC.
Herb Dean is the ref:
Guillard scores an early take down.
Guillard is just dominating this round early Ruediger is in trouble. He needs to last a bit longer after all the effort I put in to learning how to spell his name.
Gabe Ruediger scores with a take down of his own.
Guillard scores another take down.
Ruediger has Guillard in some trouble. Guillard is trying to outlast the final seconds of the first round.
Guillard is saved by the bell.
Round 1: early went to Guillard but Ruediger came back late. I'll give the round to Ruediger. Marcus and Scott are undecided.
Kevin James in the house, of course he is.
Round 2: Guillard scores the victory with a body punch. He might have knocked the wind out of him.
Winner: Melvin Guillard - 1:01 in the second round.
Rogan: Were you worried toward the end of round 1?
Guillard: I never worry, cause I train with team punishment.
Guillard: I'd like to thank the Lord that I didn't break my hand this time.
God: You're welcome. Now if you could just get Iron Sheik to stop doing it for God and Jesus, I'll make you a champion.
Loiseau Vs. Mike Swick is up next.
Bathroom break for me!
And I'm back, miss me? Ok, who said no?
Swick Vs. Loiseau
Consensus pick: Scott and I have Swick and Marcus is taking Loiseau (first disagreement of the night.)
The Natural is in the booth and I'm not talking Dustin Rhodes, but Randy Couture.
Swick is headed out, Marcus approves of the music.
Swick wants to be the First Ultimate Fighter to wear a belt according to Goldberg. I didn't know that the fighters were ever banned from wearing belts if they wanted to get on that show. Suspenders only!
Rogan: Every great fighter needs to experience a loss to see if he can come back from it. Yeah, but look at what that first loss did for Bill Goldberg? What do you mean that was a work?
Consensus: 2-1 on music for Swick, I'm the Loiseau vote this time. Though I think we all 3 liked both songs.
This next fight is sponsored by Mickey's the beer for Mrs. Foley's baby boy.
Mike Swick - 9-1, 6'1, 184
David Loiseau - 14-5, 6'0, 185.5
I didn't catch who was referee, as I was asking about the nickname. I think we all agree Swick's is more appropriate.
Round 1: Swick starts out with a body kick.
Swick is scoring with some quick punches. Now he's scored with some nice body kicks.
Loiseau starting to fight back.
Swick scores with more quick punches and scores a take down.
Round 1 in the books, I give it to Swick. 10-9.
Eddie Bravo scores it 10-9 as well.
Round 2: Loiseau started out more aggressive but Swick weathered the storm. The crowd got into it but now there is some light booing.
Goldberg plugs Ortiz-Shamrock III again.
The crowd is not happy with the action as there is some noticeable booing going on now.
Loiseau is scoring with some leg kicks.
This is easily the longest fight of the night so far, as we're halfway into the second round.
Swick scores with a take down. Loiseau is cut above the eye.
This crowd is booing. I wonder if they're used to seeing Swick fight and are not happy that they're not getting the Quick of Swick?
Round 2 is in the books, kind of a boring round.
As for scoring: I'll give this round to Swick as well 10-9 but it was probably the most boring round of fighting so far tonight.
Bravo scores it 10-9 for Swick as well.
Round 3: Swick scores with another take down early in the third round.
I think Swick is content to go for the decision at this point, he knows he's got the first round and probably believes he's got the second.
Loiseau went for a reversal but Swick didn't have much of that.
Loiseau scores with a couple of elbows and some kicks. Hopefully, that got Swick out of coasting mode. Loiseau scores with a take down of his own.
Loiseau is scoring with punches and is really rocking Swick. He's got to go for the knockout. More elbows from Loiseau and a knee to the face. This is by far Swick's longest fight in UFC, he may be tired.
A minute left in the round.
Loiseau looks better, but Swick scores with a take down to end the round.
Round 3 I gave to Loiseau. I've got him winning the round 10-9 and I'm giving the fight to Swick 29-28.
We're going to the judges for the decision, but not before we get a shot at Matt Hughes.
Bruce Buffer announces the score as all three judges scoring it 29-28 for Mike Swick. No disagreement on the decision from anyone in this room.
Loiseau put up a good fight especially in round 3 but it was a little too late.
Swick says stuff, including the phrase "I don't know what that was" and "that hurt like hell"
Swick thinks he deserves a title shot, I think he should be careful what he wishes for, he might just get it.
We go to a dark match now between Tyson Griffin and David Lee. Both fighters make their UFC debuts in this contest.
Talk moves to google ads, so I'd like to remind everyone to click them. Especially if you like what you've been reading, but if you don't like what you're reading click them and try and pay me to go away.
Round 1: According to Goldberg, Lee has spent plenty of time on his back. So have sluts.
Tyson Griffin wins by submission in 1:50 of the first round.
Scott says that Lee doesn't look like a fighter and Marcus agrees. I don't know what fighters look like.
Winner: Tyson Griffin via rear naked choke - 1:50 in round 1.
Main Event time!
Consensus is that Hughes will win this fight on a 3-0 poll. Margin for error 0 percent, I'm not stupid I heard what everyone said.
Nice video with Penn and Hughes sound bites back and forth. Really makes you want to see the fight, good thing I'm watching it then, huh?
Celebrity predictions: Rob Schneider says that Hughes is like a building and a tank. That's one weird looking building or 1 slow moving tank.
Marcus is really digging on Penn's entrance music.Scott is very much opposed to the entrance music of Matt Hughes.
Marcus is wavering on his pick:
The judges introduced.
Big John McCarthy is the referee.
Sponsors listed.
Marcus calls the music a dead heat, Scott is very anti-Hughes in that regard. Marcus changes his pick to Penn.
You know the particulars if you don't go to Wikipedia, I'm ready for a fight!
Round 1, lets get it on~!
Round 1: Sounds like the crowd is behind Penn early.
Penn avoiding the take down early.
They both trade punches. Penn scores with a right but Hughes ducks another and takes him down.
Penn is impressive on his take down defense. Penn scores with another couple of shots.
Penn with an unintentional thumb to Hughes' eye.
Scott's old country humbling consists of a thumb to the eye and kick to the balls.
The fight resumes. Hughes looking for the take down again. Crowd is very, very, pro B.J. Penn at this point.
Round 1 ends.
Hughes went for takedowns and scored with 1, but I think I'm giving the round to Penn 10-9 and Scott and Marcus agree.
Round 2: Hughes with a body kick early. Penn's take down defense is very strong right now. Hughes may have to find a new strategy the take down isn't there.
No sooner do I say that than Hughes takes him down but Penn's defense is still very strong. Hughes is spending a lot of energy trying to hold his position.
Hughes is trying some big elbows but Penn has reversed. Hughes is stuck in the body triangle.
1 minute left in the round they're still fighting in this position.
B.J> has an arm bar but Hughes is trying to survive. Hughes is in big trouble.
Round 2 and Hughes hangs on.
Score the second round to Penn 10-9.
Round 3: Hughes scores some straight punches to start off the round. Penn looks the more tired of the 2 right now.
Hughes lands a left hook.
Hughes is putting on a clinic in this round. Hughes is taking control.
Now Hughes has the support.
Hughes has Penn in deep deep trouble. Can Penn defend himself?
It is all over!
Matt Hughes is victorious, Penn wasn't defending himself in the judgment of the referee I'm sure.
Rogan: I think he blew his wad there. I thought I was watching UFC not porn?
Winner: Matt Hughes via referee stoppage in the third round. Looks like St. Pierre Vs. Hughes up next.
Hughes: I kind of wish Penn was in shape to go five rounds, I wanted to go five rounds. Ouch! Tag!
Rogan: Were you surprised at how hard he was to take down?
Hughes: Yes, I was. I create to the God, Jesus and Mr. Donny Wright.
Rogan: What's left for you in this sport?
Hughes: St. Pierre is next.
OCC: I want to see that.
St. Pierre: I'm not impressed by your performance, ouch. Lets have this fight. I love St. Pierre but I don't think he's winning against Hughes.
Another Dark Fight is up.
Mario Neto Vs. Eddie Sanchez
Big John referees.
Round 1: Some stuff has happened but I'm not really paying attention. Scott and Marcus split after the Hughes/Penn fight.
We went into round 2 and Sanchez scores with a big right to end it.
I believe I was the only person in our preview to pick Sanchez. You can see for yourself: here So far we've seen 7 fights and I am 6-1, curse you Jens Pulver!
Winner: Eddie Sanchez at 0:17 of round 2.
I lost the other 2 dark fights. I think its pointless to do so this year, but I think in 2007 Ric, Euan Art and I will be predicting pretty much every show and thus I will try to keep track of our winning percentages across the board.
Final hype for the final beating on 10/10 and Franklin Vs. Silva on 10/14.
