"DIMEBAG" DARRELL ABBOTT AUGUST 20, 1966 – DECEMBER 8, 2004
----------------------------------------------------
1 year ago I was online very late, about 1AM I think, and on one of the message boards I frequented there was a thread that reported the death of former Pantera, and at the time, current Damageplan guitarist Dimebag Darrell. I thought, "what the fuck?" There weren't any stories available on news sites so I wasn't sure how to take the news. I hoped it was some stupid rumor, even a sick shitty prank at that moment but I was determined to stay up all night until I had legit details. And then a link was provided on the message board thread that broke the tragic news, a link to a news story on the local NBC affiliate in Columbus, Ohio where the shooting took place. Darrell's band, Damageplan, were performing at a nightclub when a fan somehow got onstage and shot Darrell twice in the head at point blank range. Three other people in the club were shot as well. A police officer shot and killed the man responsible for Darrell's death. This incident really shocked and saddened me, as I listened to Pantera since high school and felt they were the last great metal band of an era when poser make-up bands like Poison and Motley Crue were the flavors of the month and "alternative" music was about to make its wave with Nirvana reluctantly waving its flag. Pantera had old-school philosophies combined with the modern-day thrash sound and pent-up aggression which all were elements that made up their sound and style. Never following trends, Pantera and Darrell helped revolutionize a metal guitar attack using interesting tunings and effective techniques that separated them from a lot of metal bands that sounded stale or changed their style in order to "get with the times". What got me even more was how it happened, I mean, this could've come out of a movie but I had never imagined someone would make it onto a stage and have the balls to commit such an atrocious action. I had discussed this with musician friends who had something else to worry about onstage besides fucking up a song or equipment malfunctioning. All that paled in comparison to the concern of some mental fuck-up shooting you to death onstage. Darrell, you are missed and will always be in my thoughts, especially on this tragic anniversary.

JOHN LENNON OCTOBER 9, 1940-DECEMBER 8, 1980
The murder of John Lennon didn't affect me until almost 10 years ago when I finally began listening to The Beatles and solo Lennon recordings. I had heard The Beatles on the radio as a young child and didn't understand the hoopla, and was aware of Lennon's death but hadn't thought much of it at the time. As I grew up I became sympathetic towards the tragedy of Lennon's death, he too was shot to death by a crazed "fan" named Mark David Chapman who had shot Lennon outside of his apartment complex. Chapman is serving a life sentence and has been rejected for parole three times already. He said recently in an interview that there would've been no way to stop him as he was determined to kill Lennon. No wonder the fucking asshole gets rejected for parole each time, not to mention that I assume Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, is present at these hearings and speaks against releasing Chapman. It's also believed that if Chapman was released from prison that his life would be in danger as he's received many threats during his prison stay.
- It's strange how two talented people lost their lives in the same manner on the same day due to crazy fucked up scumbags.
Just strange and very sad to say the least.
