The Sword of Damocles and the Chris Benoit story- karlstern.com

The sword of Damocles
Whenever one gets on a moral soapbox one runs the risk of falling off. Blanket statements of zero tolerance and moral superiority often run the risk of making the statesman look like a hypocrite or arrogant. However, when I say "I hate drugs", it comes with more life experience attached to it than I care to admit.

It seems like there have been times in my life when everyone around me was on some sort of drug. Most of which were prescribed by doctors more concerned with making money and getting repeat customers than with helping people get well. Doctors, willing or unwittingly, make money on addiction. Every return trip to a clinic yields another payday for a person who is supposed to be bound by a Hippocratic oath "To please no one will I prescribe a deadly drug nor give advice which may cause his death." Yet day in and day out that's exactly what they do.

I see people who have back pain and go to the doctor who, in return, gives them a pill, not to heal them, but to dull the pain. Instead of finding out why the back hurts and suggesting remedies to end the suffering a pill is given. Then that pill causes them stomach discomfort which, in turn, calls for another pill to be sold (and usually another trip to the clinic to complain about the stomach pain). The new pill dulls the stomach pain caused by the first pill that dulls the back ache. The problem now is the two pills together have caused them not to be able to sleep, which of course calls for another pill... and so on it goes. A doctor isn't making any money if you are well.

I see people in my life acting in irrational and illogical ways as a result of the pills they put in their mouth. I see people whose lives have not improved with the administration of medication, instead, whose lives are now significantly worse. But then again I guess their back doesn't hurt any longer. However mine does, from watching them crouched over the toilet all day long vomiting their guts up because the pills made them sick. Mine hurts from picking them up off the floor where they've fallen down after going to sleep standing straight up. Mine hurts from carrying their load because they can't.

Recently an inmate at our jail complained of feeling bad due to high blood pressure. Despite the fact he was an alcoholic and the alcoholism had likely caused his high blood pressure, a doctor somewhere had given him blood pressure pills to lower it, even when he poured alcohol in voluminous quantities down his throat. My back hurts from carrying him to jail too because he was too drunk to walk. A better prescription for his suffering may have been rehabilitation for his alcoholism thus ending, in all likelihood, his high blood pressure.

How many more people have to die? "Whatever houses I may visit, I will come for the benefit of the sick, remaining free of all intentional injustice". That too is a part of the Hippocratic oath. As my blog is also a part of a larger combat sports website the specter of the Chris Benoit story hangs like the sword of sword of Damocles over, not only pro wrestling, the WWE, but also over the heads of the medical profession.

Karl Stern Combat Sports Radio Announcement

I'll be posting the first half hour show for
Figure Four Wrestling
online around July 1st followed shortly by a longer show at our web site. I'm also in the process of re-writing and adding a bunch of MMA stuff to the wrestling
time lines book which I'll have for sale at our site by the first of August. I'll have pricing information and such available next month.

Our new show will be a lot different from our old shows as I'll be taking a more news oriented approach to things this time. The podcast community is already
covered up with people giving their opinion on what's happening. Since our show will be hosted at F4W it wouldn't make sense for me to do another show
that is a lot like the Bryan and Vinny show or Dr. Keith, instead I want to do a shorter more news oriented show for that site then on our longer show
at
KarlStern.com
I will talk more about our opinions on what's going on plus a lot more MMA and things in the combat sports realm (including fitness, some boxing, even martial
arts related movies and traditional martial arts).

I want to thank my friends and co-hosts Big Daddy Will, Rodney the Grasshopper, and Ric Gillespie for their encouragement over the last year and honestly
their interest in a new project is what inspired me to finally do something again. For those who will listen to the 30 minute shows at F4W you can expect
mainly pro wrestling with very little MMA and a lot of wrestling history stuff, then if you listen to our shows at KarlStern.com you can expect more MMA,
martial arts, and general talk. Between the two shows I think most combat sports fans will find something they like.

KarlStern.com will not be a pay site. We will generate income from the sales of our new Time Lines of Combat Sports book, merchandise (go to the store which
should have KarlStern.com merchandise available by mid-July), and advertising. If you are interested in advertising on our shows please contact me at
karl@karlstern.com .
We are especially interested in people advertising indy wrestling shows and MMA events, schools, conventions, seminars, and the such. You'll find our rates
are extremely reasonable and if you're interesting in being a regular sponsor of our shows I'll hook you up with an even better rate then.

Note from Casey: I was very surprised and also very happy to hear of Karl's return.

An Open Thank You to Karl Stern

I wasn't planning for my 500th post on the OCC to be the same post where this letter was posted, but it is cool that it turned out this way.

The following is a letter of thanks to someone without whom it could be argued, there would be no OCC. So please:

An Open Thank you to Karl Stern.

On Wednesday, Karl Stern announced that on January 1, 2007 he is transferring all of the DragonKing archives over to Bryan Alvarez of Figure 4 Weekly and walking away from the professional wrestling industry.

While I speak only for myself, but as someone who owes a great deal to Karl I am quite certain that we have not heard the last of him even after January 1. However, that not withstanding with Karl’s announcement I wanted to take this opportunity to publicly thank Karl for some of the things that he has done, and I’m not the only one.

First, let me say this. I first became aware of Karl from his appearances on the Old Wrestling Observer Live show on Eyada.com back in the day. After that show ended, I lost track of him for awhile but then with my subscription to F4Wonline.com last November I was happy to hear that Karl was still around as I remembered him quite well. The first of his podcasts I listened to was the one where he went off on PW Torch writer James Caldwell for something he had written about wrestling deaths. The first episode of the Ric and Steve...er...Karl Show I heard was the one where "Sheiky" made his first appearance on March 20, 2006. So I've been a fan of Karl's for quite some time.

I owe a great deal to Karl. The fact is that if it weren’t for the Ric & Steve…er…Karl show there would be no Old Country Corner and definitely no blog. It is through Karl that I have made contact with someone in the person of Ric Gillespie of Canvas Chronicle who is one of my biggest supporters. It is also through Karl that I have been connected to my tag team partner in wackiness Wandering Euan and also if not for that show I wouldn’t have come to know Art Shimko of the Meanfilipine.blogspot.com blog.

I’m sure that if you were to ask Karl he’d probably tell you that it is he who should thank me for all of the comedy I’ve provided his show since March of this year. However, the fact is that there are any number of shows that I could’ve emailed and displayed my minimal talents but it just wouldn’t have been the same. A lot of what made anything I sent Karl funny was his own delivery. Karl himself has also been nothing less than supportive of anything I’ve done and while I know that Karl will have a presence on F4W, I am also offering him an open forum on the OCC to talk about anything he likes from College football to Reese’s Peanut Butter cups.

I don’t want this to sound like a good bye letter as this is not good bye. If the Ric & Steve…er…Karl show is going to continue on f4wonline.com then rest assured the Old Country Corner will wander with the Extravaganza over there as well.

So again I’d just like to say thank you Karl for all of your support over the past few months.

Sincerely:
Casey Trowbridge
Casey’s Old Country Corner

I was listening to Figure 4 Daily today and was sad to hear that Karl Stern is retiring from DragonKing, however I understand his stance and position and I want him to know that I've learned a lot about pro wrestling history from both his newsletter and website. Karl's also helped inspire me to forth more effort into my blog and I also appreciate him (and Ric as well) helping promote Schlock N' Hyperbole as well as having me appear on his audio show. I just want to say thank you Karl, I know you are not done just yet but you are a great and
knowledgeable person and I'm glad to have crossed paths with you.

"I too along with Casey owe a lot of Karl as without him there would be no Wandering Euan's EuTube Extravaganza and i would not have gotten to know Casey and the other inhabitants of the Old Country Corner. I hope i have contributed something to the history of Dragonking Wrestling by introducing the greatness of Razor Ramon Hard Gay which has brought joy and amusement to Ric and Karl since the beginning of this year. I really hope the legacy of Dragonking Wrestling continues over at F4W. I would simply like to say thank you for everything Karl. Fuuuuuu~!"
