Alvarez, Prangley Victories Highlight Bodog Fight's American Debut

Following unforgettable mixed martial arts events in Vancouver, Canada and St. Petersburg, Russia, Bodog Fight finally made its much-anticipated American debut last night in Trenton, New Jersey.

Bodog Fight: Eddie Alvarez vs. Matt Lee proved a hit with the crowd at the Sovereign Bank Arena, with local favorite Eddie Alvarez of nearby Philadelphia improving to 11-1 after scoring a unanimous decision over Boston's Matt Lee, who falls to 9-6-1.

After losing his Bodog Fight welterweight championship belt last April to Nick "The Goat" Thompson in Russia, Alvarez was keen to get back to his winning ways. Lee was no pushover though, using his reach advantage to tag the former champ several times. But the explosive Alvarez gave more than he took and with Thompson sitting at ringside, Alvarez eventually sent the crowd into raptures by earning a hard fought victory.

"It feels great," said Alvarez following the fight. "It was important to me after the loss to Nick to come back here and win in front of my home fans."

The special event, which is scheduled to air in more than 90 million U.S. homes on ION Television at a later date, also featured a pair of Bodog Fight championship bouts, including a middleweight title fight between South African star Trevor Prangley and MMA legend Yuki Kondo of Japan.

With less than ten seconds left in the second round, Prangley landed a devastating punch that dropped his opponent to the canvas, and though the bell sounded to end the round, during the break ring doctors declared Kondo unable to continue due to a cut.

"It's unbelievable," declared Prangley, after winning the title. "It feels like everything I've worked for has come to this."

The new champion improves to 16-4, while the 31-year-old Pancrase veteran falls to 46-20-6.

After receiving his belt, Prangley was challenged by top middleweight fighter Matt Lindland, who entered the ring to congratulate the new champion.

"Matt has been wanting the belt for a long time," Prangley responded, "and he's going to have to fight me to get it. It's not going to be easy for him."

The second title fight on the card featured undefeated Kelly Kobold taking on New Jersey's own Tara LaRosa for the Bodog Fight women's 135-pound championship belt. The fight lasted four rounds before LaRosa sunk in an armlock and Kobald was forced to tap out.

LaRosa, who improves to 12-1, was thrilled to win the title in front of her hometown fans, and was even keen on a rematch with the hard-hitting Kobold, who drops to 16-1-1.

"It was a great fight," said LaRosa. "We had a lot of fun. A couple more fights, and she and I will do this again."

Her parents would prefer that she didn't beat people up for a living, but Tara LaRosa is quite happy doing what she loves.

"They really wish that I worked in a bank or something," laughs the women's top-ranked 135-pound mixed martial arts athlete. "But they know fighting is what I love to do, that I get paid to do it, and that I'm pretty damn good at it."

On July 14th, her family will see first hand just how good their daughter has become when LaRosa (12-1) takes on Kelly Kobold (16-0-1) for the vacant Bodog Fight women's 135-pound championship belt in Trenton, New Jersey.

"I grew up nearby," says LaRosa, who hails from the small farming community of Woodstown in Salem County, New Jersey. "So this fight is in my back yard, and all my friends and family will be there. So I can't think of a better storyline than to have them cheering for me as I try to win the women's title. It's going to be awesome."

LaRosa's combative nature was not evident during her youth, as she attended the now defunct St. James Catholic High School.

"I wasn't tough at all back then," she claims. "In fact, I couldn't pick a fight to save my life. Actually, I was known more for being the peacekeeper when a fight did break out."

It wasn't until 1996 when a love of action films featuring Jean Claude van Damme and Chuck Norris inspired her to enroll in Judo. Winning several competitions, LaRosa soon moved to MMA, studying with the legendary Royce Gracie. During this time, she often crossed paths with Laura D'Auguste, who was originally slated to fight LaRosa before tearing ankle ligaments during training.

"Laura and I both came up through the North American Grappling Association," recalls LaRosa. "We've come very close to fighting several times before, but for whatever reason we could never hook it up. So, I was really excited to finally fight her, but I guess it just wasn't meant to be."

Instead, LaRosa will face the hard-hitting Kobold, who has knock out power and excellent submissions.

Surprisingly, LaRosa thinks she is an underdog against Kobold.

"People will expect me to win, but this is not an easy fight for me. Kelly's more of a brawler, unlike Laura who is more technical. So, I'm going to have to change my game plan 180 degrees."

But LaRosa understands untimely injuries are unavoidable in this sport, and is ready to readjust her focus in order to face her new challenger.

"You just take it as it comes. It's a five round title fight with an opponent who is much heavier and stronger, but I'm up for it. I can adapt."

Meantime, fans of LaRosa can catch her in action on the next episode of Bodog Fight: Paradise Lost this Tuesday, July 10th at 11 p.m. / 10 p.m. Central on ION television and in Canada on The Fight Network.

The episode features a hard-fought battle between LaRosa and South Dakota's Shayna Baszler (6-3).

Bodog's Former Welterweight Champ Wants His Belt Back

Philadelphia has long been a fertile breeding ground for some of the world's best fighters, both real and fictional - boxers like "Smokin" Joe Frazier and Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins, not to mention Sly Stallone's Rocky Balboa.

These days, the "City of Brotherly Love" is home to some of America's toughest mixed martial arts fighters, like Eddie Alvarez.

With movie-star looks and lightning fast hooks, the 23-year-old product of Philadelphia's Fight Factory is one of the most marketable young fighters on the MMA scene.

"I think I was born to fight," says Alvarez. "I grew up in Kensington, which is a working class neighborhood in Philly known for fighting, so it's been around me my whole life." A two-time All-American wrestler in high school, Alvarez wrestled with life after graduation.

"Trouble seemed to find me, and I wound up getting into fights on the street, so I decided to take it a little more seriously and really learn how to fight. I went to a class at Steven Haigh's Fight Factory and got hooked on MMA."

Alvarez began his pro career in December, 2003 with a first round KO over Anthony Ladonna in Ring of Combat 5 in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

"I'd fought on the street so many times I was very composed in the ring," he recalls. "I just felt comfortable, like I was in there doing what I was supposed to be doing."

Alvarez continued to vanquish his opponents with devastating punching power, amassing a record of 6-0 with five KO's, before finding himself in Atlantic City for a Mixed Fighting Championship event in June, 2006.

With Pride heavyweight champ Fedor Emelianenko looking on, Alvarez faced off against veteran fighter Derrick Noble for the MFC welterweight title belt.

"I had about seven hundred fans that came to see me fight," remembers Alvarez. "I didn't want to disappoint them, so I came out swinging."

The fight lasted exactly 61 seconds, with Alvarez pummeling Noble into his corner to earn the title by knockout.

"Being able to knockout a guy who had only been knocked out once in 25 fights made people sit up and really take notice," says Alvarez.

He would go on to defend his title in Tokyo, Japan, where he knocked out Hidenobu Koike a minute and a half into the 1st round.

Alvarez then challenged the iron-jawed Aaron Riley in December of `06 for the vacant Bodog Fight Welterweight Title at Bodog Fight: USA vs. Russia in Vancouver, Canada. Riley lasted 65 seconds before succumbing to the powerful strikes of Alvarez, who despite his impressive knockout record and chiseled physique, says he doesn't focus much on strength training.

"I believe in speed more than anything, which is why I drifted away from my weight lifting at the beginning of my fight career and began thinking about speed more than strength. With four-once gloves, in MMA it's not who hits the hardest. It's who gets there first that usually wins."

Alvarez landed early and often against his next opponent, Scott Henze, whose corner mercifully threw in the towel at 3:56 of round one at Bodog Fight: Costa Rica Combat.

With the Philly brawler improving his record to 10-0, Alvarez traveled to St. Petersburg, Russia for Bodog Fight: Clash of the Nations, where he was matched up against Nick "The Goat" Thompson - whose nickname refers to an animal notorious for losing consciousness when frightened.

Easy pickings for the undefeated Alvarez, right? Not quite.

Using his reach advantage to keep Alvarez at bay, the larger Thompson floored the champ with a left hand late in the second round to become Bodog Fight's new welterweight champion.

Now, the former undefeated champ wants his title back.

Fortunately for the Philly fighter, the road back starts in his own back yard, with Bodog Fight: Eddie Alvarez vs. Matt Lee set to take place in nearby Trenton, New Jersey on Saturday, July 14th.

With thousands of his friends and fans in attendance, Alvarez plans to prove the heart of a champion doesn't stop beating without a belt. He's also got a score to settle with Boston's Matt Lee (9-5-1).

"He won a decision over my trainer (Stephen Haigh) last year," says Alvarez. "So, on behalf of the Fight Factory, I'm gonna pay him back."

In addition to the headline fight between Alvarez and Lee, the event card also features two championship bouts - a middleweight title fight between Trevor Prangley and Yuki Kondo, and a women's 135-pound championship bout between New Jersey's Tara LaRosa and New York's Laura D'Auguste.

There's always a healthy degree of skepticism when it comes to cross-over athletes. A few have enjoyed success, like Bo Jackson, Deion Sanders and Dennis Rodman (or was he a cross-dressing success?), but remember when Michael Jordan tried his hand at baseball? Yikes.

The world of mixed martial arts is no stranger to two-sport athletes, although the best examples have all left behind their former sports to pursue a full-time career in MMA. Boxers like Tommy Morrison and Ray Mercer, Olympic wrestlers like Bodog Fight's own Matt Lindland, and pro wrestlers like Brock Lesnar and Daniel Puder.

The 25-year-old Puder won World Wrestling Entertainment's first "Tough Enough Challenge" in 2004, but he drew the ire of Vince McMahon by straying from the promoter's plan to have the popular Kurt Angle punish him during a WWE event. Instead, Puder humiliated Angle in front of a live audience by trapping the former Olympic Gold Medal wrestler in a "key lock". Angle has vowed revenge ever since.

If he wants his reprisal, Angle will have to follow Puder to MMA, but it won't be easy. Puder is undefeated in four fights heading into his heavyweight bout with Michael Alden on the next episode of Bodog Fight: Paradise Lost this Tuesday, July 3rd at 11 p.m. / 10 p.m. Central on ION television and in Canada on The Fight Network.

The 23-year-old Alden is also undefeated at 6-0, and is expected to provide Puder with his toughest test to date. But Puder says his wrestling pedigree has prepared him well for the rigors of MMA.

"I think that pro-wrestling toughens you up," he says. "You're falling more, you're being dropped more and you can get hurt a lot quicker. I've been flash KO'd a few times and I had to keep going in the match."

But according to Bodog Fight founder Calvin Ayre, cross-over MMA athletes like Puder are the exception rather than the rule.

"MMA is such a multi-dimentional sport that most cross-over athletes find the transition difficult, so bringing them into an organization like Bodog Fight requires a different approach," says Ayre. "You have to assess their progress carefully. Matching them up with appropriate opponents can sometimes be difficult."

If Angle does eventually make the jump to MMA, Ayre would have no problem finding him an opponent.

"Puder would be the obvious choice, but Kurt would probably want to get a few fights under his belt first," says Ayre. "But as a fan, I'd love to see that fight."

The Plot thickens...

You'd think that would be the end of it, but thank God, Jesus and the Late Mr. McMahon it is not the case.

Enter Percy Walker and while I've got no idea who the hell Percy Walker is or if I should even care, even if I should, I don't but that's another matter.

Bodog Fight Billionaire Makes UFC President "An Offer He Can't Refuse"

In response to recent comments made by Ultimate Fighting Championship president Dana White, Bodog Fight founder Calvin Ayre is pleased to extend a once-in-a-lifetime offer to his mixed martial arts rival.

White's unfortunate public diatribe included slanderous comments about the Canadian billionaire, referring to the online gaming mogul as a "criminal". The notoriously bald UFC promoter goes on to liken Mr. Ayre to a Richard Pryor character, stating "he's like that guy in Brewster's Millions who is trying to spend all his money in 48 hours."

With July 14th's Bodog Fight: Eddie Alvarez vs. Matt Lee marking Ayre's first event on U.S. soil, the digital entertainment icon is referencing another Hollywood film, The Godfather, by making White "an offer he can't refuse."

"Sources tell me Dana's a big Bodog Fight fan," said Ayre. "He must be. He can't stop talking about us. Personally, I love it when he keeps mentioning my organization in the media. He doesn't seem to realize that each time he does, he only makes me more money, which is why I want to repay him by allowing him to experience the luxurious lifestyle I am fortunate to enjoy for 48 hours."

"Since, regrettably, I am unable to attend the upcoming Bodog Fight event in New Jersey, I will offer to send my private jet - complete with an assortment of beautiful Bodog Girls - to pick up Mr. White, wherever he may be. I will then fly him to the east coast where he will enjoy a front row seat to our next event, followed by a VIP evening including a comfortable five-star overnight stay in a nearby Atlantic City hotel. Bodog Fight's Prangley says "Professional" Comes Tailor Made

When devising a game plan, most mixed martial arts fighters play to their strengths - brawlers brawl, wrestlers wrestle and grapplers grapple. Clearly, middleweight sensation Trevor Prangley doesn't subscribe to this theory.

Despite his wrestling pedigree, the 34-year-old South African vows to beat striker Pierre "The Professional" Guillet at his own game when the two square off on an all new episode of Bodog Fight: Costa Rica Combat this Tuesday, May 29th at 11 p.m. / 10 p.m. Central on ION Television.

"I am actually looking forward to trading punches with him," says Prangley.

"Pierre is primarily a stand-up fighter, but I've been working hard in the gym to improve that particular aspect of my game. I think this fight will provide the perfect opportunity for me to see just how far I've come. Pierre is a tough guy, but I'm supremely confident in my own ability."

Prangley, who now trains at the Lion's Den in Idaho, has a pro record of 14-4, with notable wins over Chael Sonnen and Travis Lutter. He also earned his second unanimous decision over hard-hitting Andrei Semenov in December at Bodog Fight: USA vs. Russia.

Guillet is a 33-year-old career military man, who has served over 10 years in the US Air Force. Currently stationed in the UK, he has appeared in Cage Rage and Ultimate Combat competitions, amassing a pro record of 10-4.

In other MMA action, 25-year-old Utah native Kyacey "Ice Cold" Uscola (12-6) squares off against Pancrase veteran, Izuru Takeuchi (20-8-1).

Making his second trip to Costa Rica, Uscola's on the comeback trail. "Ice Cold" suffered a meltdown against Prangley in the first season of Bodog Fight, and was caught with an arm triangle choke. However, this knockout specialist is always dangerous and is anxious to get back in the win column.

Takeuchi is no pushover though. The 32-year-old native of Okayama, Japan, has competed in numerous grappling tournaments, including the All-Japan Combat Wrestling Championships.

New Jersey Event Marks Bodog Fight's American Debut

Following unforgettable mixed martial arts events in Vancouver, Canada and St. Petersburg, Russia, Bodog Fight is pleased to announce its American debut.

On Saturday, July 14th, Bodog Fighters will become "Garden State" warriors when they visit the Sovereign Bank Arena on the shores of the Delaware River in Trenton, New Jersey for Bodog Fight: Eddie Alvarez vs. Matt Lee.

After losing his Bodog Fight welterweight championship belt last April to Nick "The Goat" Thompson in Russia, Philadelphia's Eddie Alvarez (9-1) is looking to get back to his winning ways. The explosive striker will face Boston's Matt Lee (9-5-1) at this special event, which is scheduled to air in more than 90 million U.S. homes on ION Television at a later date.

After winning a decision over Alvarez's Fight Factory trainer, Stephen Haigh, last year, Lee is confident he can overcome Haigh's disciple. "I beat the teacher, now I'm going to beat up on the student," warns the Team Elite fighter.

Of course, Alvarez has other ideas.

"This fight is going to accomplish three things on my list," declares Eddie. "First, I'm going to even the score on behalf of my coach. Second, I'm going to put on a show for all my fans up from Philly. Last, but not least, beating Matt is going to put me a step closer to winning back my championship belt."

Alvarez and Lee are not the only ones looking forward to their fight. "I expect these two will provide us with some fireworks, which will be a great way to mark our first ever American event," says Bodog Entertainment Founder Calvin Ayre.

Also featured will be a middleweight title fight between rising star Trevor Prangley and MMA legend Yuki Kondo.

Fighting out of Niigata, Japan, Kondo (46-19-6) has faced a who's who of the sport, including Tito Ortiz, Wanderlei Silva, Phil Baroni, Josh Barnett, and Dan Henderson. Now, the 31-year-old Pancrase veteran is confident he can whip Prangley.

"Trevor is tough, but I've fought some of the best fighters in the world and I believe my experience will serve me well for this fight," warned Kondo.

34-year-old Prangley is a native of South Africa who now trains at the Lion's Den in Idaho. He has a pro record of 14-4 with notable wins over Travis Lutter and Kyacey "Ice Cold" Uscola. He also earned his second unanimous decision over hard-hitting Andrei Semenov in Vancouver at Bodog Fight: USA vs. Russia, and is scheduled to appear on an upcoming episode of the television series Bodog Fight: Costa Rica Combat.

"I'm in fantastic shape, and I'm looking forward to putting on a show for the fans in New Jersey," declared Prangley. "It's every fighter's goal to win a title belt and I won't let Yuki Kondo stand in my way."

A second title fight is also on the card, as New York's Laura D'Auguste crosses the Hudson River for a shot at the Bodog Fight women's 135-pound championship belt. She will face a hostile crowd, however, as she squares off against New Jersey's own Tara LaRosa.

"It's going to be a huge thrill fighting for the title in front of my home fans, and I look forward to hearing them cheer when my arm is raised after the fight," said a confident LaRosa.

Russians Rule Bodog Fight: Clash of the Nations MMA Pay-Per View

St. Petersburg, Russia - The Russian Red Devils capitalized on their comrades’ support to emerge victorious from Russia’s ICE Palace Arena on Saturday,
April 14th in the most anticipated pay-per-view event of the year, BodogFight: Fedor Emelianenko vs Matt Lindland, Clash of the Nations.


The star-studded mixed martial arts card lived up to its billing, with Fedor Emelianenko, the #1 ranked heavyweight in the world taking on the #1 ranked
middleweight, Matt "The Law" Lindland, in the main event. In the end, the sold out crowd, which included Russian President Vladimir Putin, got what they
wanted, as their beloved champion improved to 26-1 after forcing his brave American challenger to tap out in the very first round.

Lindland, now 20-5, started strong by opening a huge gash over Emelianenko’s right eye with his first punch. Controversy followed though, as the 30 year
old Russian then used the ropes to prevent and reverse an attempted takedown. Once on top of his opponent, Emelianenko sealed the victory with an inescapable
arm bar.

Lindland refused to make excuses after the fight, although the 2000 Olympic silver medalist wrestler was adamant about the fact that he would like a rematch.

"I absolutely, absolutely would like a rematch," said Lindland. "I’m not saying the outcome would have been any different but that’s a much different fight
if the referee does what he’s supposed to and I wind up on top and am able to utilize my skills there."

After the fight, Emenianenko’s gloves were auctioned off to raise money for the Calvin Ayre Foundation, with proceeds donated to a local orphanage.

In other MMA action, Emelianenko’s brother, Aleksander, also saw his arm raised after pummeling Nevada’s Eric Pele in a super-heavyweight bout. Both fighters
now stand at 10-3. Other Russian victories included Roman Zentsov over France’s Kristof Midoux, Eric Oganov over American Derrick Noble, and Amar Suloev
scoring a devastating first round knockout over American Andy Foster.

The upset of the night saw Nick "The Goat" Thompson lift the Bodog Fight welterweight title from former champ Eddie Alvarez. The product of Philadelphia’s
famous Fight Factory was TKO’d in the second round, just moments after the outspoken Thompson told legendary ringside announcer Bob "the Colonel" Sheridan
he was about to "kick into third gear". True to his word Thompson improved to 31-9, while Alvarez suffers his first defeat in ten fights.

American Josh "Buffalohead" Curran trampled Jarno Nurminen of Finland. Canada’s Bill "The Butcher" Mahood tenderized American Steve Steinbeiss, whose brother
Ray outfought Russia’s Dmitry Samoilov. Brazil’s Rodrigo Damm got past American Santino DeFranco, while Damm’s compatriot, Jorge Santiago, upset local
favorite Andrei Semenov.

In women’s 135 pound action, American Julie Kedzie temporarily silenced the Russian crowd with a TKO victory over Julia Berezekova, while fellow American
Amanda Buckner scored a unanimous decision over Hitomi Akano of Japan.

Matt Lindland says that he's ready for Fedor. Nice to see he's come to grips with his own doom.

Travis Wiuff, he of getting clobbered by James Lee at Pride 33 fame, returns to action tonight for the IFC Cruiserweight (230 LB limit) title. This belt may mean even less than WWE's cruiserweight title.

The official fightcard for UFC 70 'Nations Collide' has been released

Bodogfight, the Brothers Emelianenko make Mixed Martial Arts History

Russian Heavyweights Will Fight at Home for First Time During April 14 PPV

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia, March 27 -- It's difficult to imagine the two toughest brothers on the planet have never fought professionally on their home soil.
That situation will soon change. Fedor and Aleksander Emelianenko will make their BodogFight debuts when they headline the much-anticipated pay-per-view
spectacle on April 14 at the ICE Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia.


The two heavyweights are already household names in Japan, but have waited a long time to show off their considerable mixed martial arts skills to their

record, but will be fighting for the first time as a heavyweight.

"I do know Matt is a good fighter who makes a strong attack when he stands. He will also be putting on weight for this fight, so I am preparing myself seriously
at an Olympic mountain training camp in Kislovodsk," Fedor says.

It was Fedor's commitment to training that helped usher his younger brother Aleksander into the sport of MMA. Instead of babysitting Aleks, who is five
years his junior, Fedor would take him along to Sambo practice. Learning to imitate his brother's moves, Aleks soon went on to train with the legendary
Vladimir Mihailovich Voronov. Eventually, he became a two-time Russian national Sambo champion, and a two-time world Sambo champion, and is now ranked
among the top 10 heavyweights in the world.
